Survey Logic is a feature that optimizes the respondent’s engagement with your survey questions. It allows you to remove irrelevant steps from the user journey. This reduces friction, keeping the respondent engaged in providing you with more pointed responses.
How Survey Logic works
By default, Hotjar sends a user to the next question after answering a question. If you have more than one question in your Survey, you have the option to decide which question will be shown to your respondent next. Click on the dropdown menu below the question to choose this option.
You can choose to send respondents to a specific follow-up question or send them straight to the end of the survey based on their answer by selecting one of the logic options.
You can apply the following logic options to your Survey:
- Next question: This takes the respondent to the next question in numerical order. This is the default behavior for Survey questions.
- Specific question: This takes the respondent to a specific question after they answer, regardless of what they answer.
- Thank you message: This shows the respondent the Thank you message and ends the Survey.
Radio button questions and Net Promoter Score® questions have an additional logic option which allows you to branch the survey based on the answer given:
- Specific question based on answer: This will take the respondent to a specific question based on the answer they have provided.
Survey Logic Example
There are several paths through a survey which differ based on the response provided.
In the flowchart below, the first question screens all respondents against their willingness to participate. It then directs them into an appropriate branch of the Survey.
Why can I only route Checkboxes to one question?
Checkboxes do not support Specific question based on answer, because a Checkbox question can have more than one answer. If the respondent only needs to give one answer, you should use Radio buttons which enable you to route the respondent based on their answer.
