From Friday July 1, 2022 we're moving accounts that were created before April 20, 2022 to our updated pricing model.
Under the updated pricing model, we've grouped Surveys and Feedback into a separate product called Ask that’s priced based on the number of responses you want to collect across Surveys and Feedback. Heatmaps and Recordings will be grouped into a separate product called Observe and will still be priced based on the number of daily sessions.
Both products, Observe and Ask, will have the Basic (free), Plus, Business, and Scale plans available, and the selected plan can be different for each product.
See the Updating our pricing model blog post for all the details on this update.
Hotjar allows you to trigger Heatmaps, Recordings, and Feedback tools by Event, instead of page targeting rules. This is useful if you want to trigger one of these tools on an event such as a button click.
Heatmaps
Below are some useful examples of event-based filtering for Heatmaps:
- A/B testing, when the URL is the same for both variations
- Capturing Heatmaps of modals
- Capturing specific states of your single-page web application

Recordings
Events for Recordings are only available on the Observe Plus, Observe Business, and Observe Scale plans.
Events for Recordings can only be used on our paid Observe plans. If you're interested in upgrading, see our article on How to Upgrade Your Hotjar Plan.
One example where triggering Recordings using events is:
- When you only want to Record users after they have logged in
Check out our step by step Events Recording guide and learn more about Using Events for Recordings Targeting.
Feedback tools
Events for Surveys and Feedback is only available on the Ask Plus, Ask Business, and Ask Scale plans.
Events for Surveys and Feedback can only be used on our paid Ask plans. If you're interested in upgrading, see our article on How to Upgrade Your Hotjar Plan.
Below are examples of triggering Feedback tools using events:
- For requesting additional feedback after upvoting or downvoting an article
- Collecting feedback from users who interact with a fake door test

You can also set up Events through Google Tag Manager.
If you use Google Tag Manager to load the Hotjar script on your site, you can set up Hotjar events on the GTM tag that fires the Hotjar tracking code. Check out this guide on how to set up Hotjar events in GTM.
